“Pro Patria” is the Latin motto of the
Royal Canadian Regiment, meaning “For One’s Country”. This musical composition
was written by Lieutenant-Colonel George J. Maunsell, who was the Commandant of
the Infantry School Corps (ISC) in Fredericton. He dedicated this march tune to
Lady Alice Caron (1837-1924), the wife of Lord Joseph-Philippe-René-Adolphe
Caron, who was the Minister of Militia and Defence in the government of Sir
John A. Macdonald. In 1885 Lord Caron directed the assault on Indigenous peoples
in Saskatchewan, known as the North-West Resistance. The ISC (“B” and “C” Companies)
saw active service during the Resistance, and was later posted to the Yukon,
where they helped maintain law and order during the Klondike Gold Rush.
