The King's South Africa Medal was awarded,
along with the Queen's South Africa medal, to almost all British and
Colonial military personnel who served in the South African War in 1901 and
1902. This medal was awarded to Sergeant William L. Cope of the British 12th
(Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers. In 1901, his regiment served in Eastern
Transvaal, taking part in General French's sweep to the Swazi border and the
Vryheid district. Near the end of the war the 12th Royal Lancers were posted to
Cape Colony, where they experienced sharp fighting, often involving casualties.
