This cartouche pouch and cross belt to
John Vicars Johnston (1860-1939), who began his military career with the 71st
York Battalion. He was later granted an officer's commission, becoming a Second
Lieutenant with the Infantry School Corps in Fredericton, and was also at one
time the Adjutant of the company. As Adjutant, Lt Johnston reported directly to
the commanding officer, and helped to ensure the efficient running of the
unit. John Johnston retired from the ISC in 1898 as Captain to operate his father's grocery store in Nashwaaksis.
