“Fern Hill Waltzes” was written by
Lieutenant-Colonel George J. Maunsell (1836 - 1906) and was dedicated to Lady
Eugenie Middleton (1846-1899), wife of Sir Frederick Middleton, who was the
British General commanding Canadian forces during the Battle of Batoche in
Saskatchewan in 1885. The Infantry School Corps (Companies B & C) participated in this conflict,
as well as others in Saskatchewan at Fish Creek and Cut Knife Hill. Fern Hill
was the name of Col. Maunsell’s estate in Springhill (NB). Every week during
the winter he commanded his soldiers to march in formation five miles up the
middle of the river on snowshoes to the music of a piccolo, arriving at his Springhill
estate, where they would then be ordered to eat their rations and march back to
Fredericton.

« Fern Hill Waltzes » a été composé par le lieutenant-colonel
George J. Maunsell (1836 - 1906) et dédié à Lady Eugenie Middleton (1846-1899),
épouse de sir Frederick Middleton, qui était le général britannique commandant
les forces canadiennes lors de la bataille de Batoche en Saskatchewan en 1885.
Le Corps d’école de l'infanterie (compagnies « B » et « C ») a participé à ce conflit, ainsi que d'autres
en Saskatchewan, soit à Fish Creek et Cut Knife Hill. Fern Hill était le nom du
patrimoine du colonel Maunsell à Springhill (N.-B.). Chaque semaine, pendant
l'hiver, il donnait l'ordre à ses soldats de marcher en formation pendant cinq miles en remontant au milieu de la
rivière en raquettes. Sur la musique d'un piccolo, les soldats marchaient jusqu'à
son domaine de Springhill, où ils devaient alors manger leurs rations et
marcher de nouveau jusqu'à Fredericton.
